THE ROLE OF QUARK POLARIZATION IN HEAVY QUARK FRAGMENTATION
We calculate the exact fragmentation functions for c and b quark fragmentation taking into account the spin orientation of the initial heavy quark in the form of analytical and rather simple expressions. Our calculations show that spin orientation may have an important effect on the fragmentation spectrum. This effect is more striking in the cases of c ?D, D*; c? ? , ? , and ?B , B *.

We outline a simple way to include heavy quark vacuum polarization in lattice QCD simulations. The method, based on effective field theory, requires only a trivial modification of the gluon action and has no impact on simulation times. We compute the virtual O(αs n 2 f ) corrections to the heavy quark vector current correlator in terms of expansions in the external momentum and as an exact numerical solution. As a byproduct, the available high-energy expansion at the three-loop level is extended.
